OCTOBER NEWSLETTER

Greetings one and all

Lots of recent success by members of our club at different tournaments should be applauded.
As you know Barb and Liz Rocks won the WPA Women’s doubles; Barb, Claire and Joan won the WPA Women’s triples the following day.
This last weekend at the WPA doubles at Kapiti, Michael Rocks along with his partner Roy, won the tournament, Graeme M and Barb were second; Joan and Claire were third.
Tom and Roger made it through to the last 8. What a great two weekends for the club and I am sure you will all join me n congratulating everyone on their achievements.

I would also like to congratulate Elva, who along with her daughter and another partner, recently won the Chartered Clubs national indoor bowls triples tournament.
Well done Elva and we are looking forward to seeing more of you and Kelly now that the summer months are approaching.

THANK YOU

Thanks to Elsie and Ken who helped out last Thursday with a small group of people who wanted to come along and play Petanque for a couple of hours. It is good to have such willing volunteers.

WEDNESDAY NIGHTS

The new start time rule took effect last Wednesday. Thank you everyone for being so prompt. We had a great turnout – 19 in all. You committee have decided to make it a little more interesting. We will re draw after the 1st game so you will have a new partner. It also gives those who were in a triples team a chance to play doubles and also allows us to insert in any late comers.
Just to remind you, you must be either there in person or phone in by 5.55 and play starts at 6.00pm. Any late comers will only be allowed to play in the second game. Remember that points are being awarded for these games so it is in your interest to be on time.

KHANDALLAH 3 BOULE OPEN TRIPLES:

This very interesting tournament is being held on Sunday the 7th of November.
Registration forms are available on the notice board or on the website. The tournament is limited to 20 teams.
Any further info contact Michael on
(04) 973 0011 or email him on
michael.rocks@paradise.net.nz
Imagine 18 boule in a game. It is actually harder to get points than in 2 boule triples.

PNZ DOUBLES:

A number of club members are off to the National Doubles at Kapiti over Labour Weekend.
Here are a couple of rules from the PNZ rule book that may interest those competing.

1. Measuring Equipment

The tournament is being played under FIPJP rules. This means that all teams must have their own appropriate equipment for measuring points, as required by Article 26

If teams do not have their own equipment, the Umpire may impose penalties as outlined in Article 10. These include, after a warning
- disqualification of the offending team for one end.
- Disqualification of the offending team for the game.

2. Smoking Policy

A reminder that Petanque New Zealand’s policy is that smoking is not permitted on the terrain or in close proximity to players, during play at any time.
This means that nobody (spectators or competitors) is allowed to smoke on the terrain at any time that any games are in progress.

“Close proximity” is defined as 1 metre outside the solid boundaries of the terrain. As advised in PNZ’s April 2004 newsletter to clubs, this means that simply stepping off the terrain, and smoking while standing on the edge, is not complying.

Players should be aware that should a complaint be made, the umpire will be within his/her rights to take appropriate action”

Please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. This may answer the question that was being asked last weekend at the WPA doubles as to why so few teams are entering these tournaments. Imagine how boring it is going to be for the poor sod who has to go around all day measuring people 1 metre from the piste. I think they should make it 1 metre for cigarettes, 1.3 meters for pipes and 1.5 meters for cigars (no offence Ralph) and 2 metres for dope. Mind you the person who invented the rule must have been on it at the time.
It reminds me of the time last year, when the no smoking rule was introduced. I was playing at Park Ave. At that early stage we were told that smoking had been banned because it was offensive and lowered the standard of the game so we were not allowed to smoke on the piste. There had been a lot of rain the night before and we were not allowed to stand on the grass surrounding the piste, boards had been out down. I asked where I could have a cigarette as I wasn’t allowed to smoke on the piste and I wasn’t allowed to stand on the grass. I was told to go into the clubrooms and have one!!!

I don’t mind rules as long as they are sensible and are adhered to at ALL times.
At the WPA doubles last weekend we were allocated piste to play on and were told that we had to play on those piste. We waited 45 minutes for one game, even though both teams were available. During the next round, one senior team had to wait for a piste, so they were told they could play on any “unmarked” piste which were those that had not been set aside for the tournament. They chose to play on a piste that was not only “marked” but they had already played 2 games on it. Now to me. that is straight out favoritism and totally unfair. People see it and get bothered by it.

The rules are the rules and should apply to everyone but I hope that this sport doesn’t become so bogged down with rules that it becomes unenjoyable.

And finally, out of a book of self inflicted disasters comes this little story.

In July 1983, a San Francisco store put on the shelves, 18 bottles of wine marked at just over $3.00 each.
Ten of the bottles were 1951 Chateau Lafite-Rothschild and the remaining eight were 1966 Chateau Latour, both valued in the hundreds of dollars per bottle.
The store found out their mistake – but too late. A wine loving waiter, Robert Kendall, told them he loved their “special offer”, but not until he had bought every bottle.
