National Club Championships: Results

Division (1)
1st: Bay View; 2nd: Central Combined; 3rd: Masterton
Division (2)
1st: Mainlanders

"It’s official, the Bay View Club is now the best in the country. Twice National Triples Champion, Hawke’s Bay’s Mr Petanque - Murray Porter, has been flying Bay View’s flag for well over 10 years – and now he can prove it.

Over the Anzac Weekend, Bay View defeated 10 other club teams from around the country to win the National Petanque Club Championship and allow Porter to claim his 3rd National Title...." Text taken from this page.

Although I no longer belong to a petanque club, I still follow the sport with interest. I am intrigued to read the results of the club champs to see there are combined club teams entering. Surely this defeats the whole purpose of finding the best club in the country and makes this tournament no different than any other. Does this mean that teams entered into womens tournaments can now recruit men and senior tournaments can now recruit the under 60's? If not, why not?

With such a poor turn out of clubs participating it seems very bold to call Bay View the best in the country. especially when the 2009 champions did not participate.
My bet is at least 3 auckland clubs would give them a real run for there money and maybe 1 or 2 from Wellington as well. the problem was the hard to get to out of the main way venue that limited the number of entries. viv La Herne bay

Yes, I know exactly what you mean Ricardo. The dirt track heading south from the bottom of the Bombay Hills and the various crossings by raft over the many rivers makes travelling very arduous and treacherous. Funnily enough people from this end of the country see to find their way to Auckland with no problem - AND interesting to note that one team from the South Island seemed to find their way across the big river! If the defending champs couldn't make the effort then tough titty to them. I wonder how the Auckland players manage to find their way around the world to play in international tournaments when the find it too hard to get to Levin. Maybe the criteria for picking international teams should be a geography lesson rather than skill at the game.

I'm sure Graeme and whoever touche (rhymes with..) is love knocking us Aucklanders.

However, Ricardo has got a good point. It was a bad turnout to the national club champs. Whatever the reason that's a pity, not least of all for Bay View, who came close to winning last year as well.

Surely the lesson is if you're going to have a club champs, how do you get everything right so clubs are keen to participate?

Is it the location? timing? format? Lack of interest? Whatever, if we're going to do a club champs, lets do it right.

It is not so much knocking Aucklanders, Michael, but it only ever seems to be Aucklanders who complain about the location of tournaments and it only seems to be Aucklanders who don't support national tournaments when it is outside their travel comfort zone. If you put a ruler on a map of New Zealand, Levin is not far off being in the centre. What could be more fairer than that. From what I have heard, this years club tournament was very well run. There seemed to be no complaints last year when it was held in Rotorua which is a long way tp travel for a lot of clubs. Horowhenua has gone to huge expense and time to create enough pistes to enable them to hold big tournaments and they should be supported.

Hang on !!!Hawkes Bay won it,and that is fair and square?? got no question about that.

Now with Auckland not participating that is up to the Clubs And Players, if players can not Financialy go to those trip, then i guess players can not afford its simple as that .

Whats the Wellington ( Some ) CLubs excuses for not participating at Levin, they are basically Next Door !!!

whats they EXCUSES for it !!!

Seven of the eleven teams entered were from the Wellingtion region, Georgio. Not a bad percentage.
