It is critical that New Zealand attends

Text (by Sarah Jane Wright) taken from PATONKAZ FB page.

"As at the closing date for registrations (31st October), PNZ had
received only 5 registrations for the Open Men's section.

This is not enough to make up a Men's team for the 2013 Trans Tasman
Challenge, or a full-strength team for the 2013 Oceania Championships.

It is critical that New Zealand attends the 2013 Oceania Championships,
as qualifying for the 2014 World Championships will be held there. We do
not know the format for this qualifying yet, and we do not want to
compromise our position in any way. If we don't go to Oceania, it is
highly unlikely that we will get to the Worlds.

The 2014 Worlds will probably be held in Tahiti, so it would be doubly a
pity not to be sending a team to this event when it is being held almost
in our "backyard".

PNZ therefore proposes to re-open registration for the national
representation selection process, for the Open Men's section only, until
30th November 2012.

We hope some players who may have been in two minds about joining the
process may be encouraged to enter in light of the above circumstances,
so that we are able to field full teams for the 2013 internationals. If
you know of anyone in this position, please talk to them!

Eligible players can download a registration form from the website, or
email"  secretary@petanquenz.com

Time to give blind freddy a chance. 7 people competing for 6 spots and only 1 of nz top 10 players in that list ( my view I know) until you sort out the stupid put your name forward scanario you will not get ahead. Get People like Micheal emerson, david lippard ETC selecting from the player pool who should attend camps and then provide support to these people to do that. Why are we sitting on funds and not using them to promote this sport and help our international players.

I get your point Myles and I don't necessarily disagree with you, but there is no need to be rude about players. Those players put their name forward not knowing that the "top" players had not, think you'll find they were even more surprise than anyone to find themselves in this situation. Players are entitled to challenge themselves and put themselves out there, if they didn’t the game would stagnate. You have put your name down for Selection before, did anyone tell you shouldn’t be there? I think you will find they were looking forward to training and competing with the top players, and giving themselves a challenge, no looking for a back door pass. Take Care SJ

While you write fair comment in this situation that I agree with SJ, not quite factual, since the two players who added their names during the extended timeframe knew there were only five names so must have had some thought of making a team! Not to say they are not worthy - just keeping the facts straight. I do also agree with Myles that there must be something intrinsically wrong with a system that manages to turn people off applying. Hi Liz. Firstly who said they put they name down for The world's or oceania there are options, are you now saying that TT is is only restricted to the best of the best ? That would give none of our up and coming players anything to aim for if you take that a away as well. Even with the second round of entry's none of us were to know whom would change their mind. Barabara did not release the list until the the 4th of Dec and I certainly did not ask who was in. Thanks SJ

lost my last post, try again.

Every system we have had has turned into a fight. Different boards, different slection processes = same Drama. How do you find a system that suits everyone ? suggestions welcome.

sorry name - SJ

I wasn't actually saying anything like that, not quite sure how you came up with an interpretation that was never intended. Was that my comment you were alluding to? I don't think I mentioned any particular tournament.
Not to worry. Liz

Not sure how I came up with that either, nevermind. In Dez's case he didn't want to see TT fall over so chucked his name in, not knowing if anyone eles would, that was his motivation for putting his name down. As for Selections always a heated debate every year, I don't know the answer. Wish I did. Have a good Xmas Liz, Take Care SJ

Thanks Sarah-Jane, it is a difficult topic and I wish I knew the answer too! A good Christmas and New Year to you and Dez.

Hi Sarah. At no time did i mean to sound rude about the players. Those that have put their name down have done the hard yards and good luck to them. I was merely pointing out what i said 4 years ago that one day someone( Blind freddy) will be able to come along having never even played the game and get into the NZ team and had it not been for a couple of extra names this sanario could of happend this time. 6 Is the minimum number for most tournaments (Bar the worlds) that we play in. so when we had only 5 names blind freddy would of got in by default if we sent a team that is. so this system has run it's cause. as i said use the strenths and skills we have in the game and get real competition going. So as i said put a carrot in the right place start using some of the money we have saved for a rainy day and promote the game.
